Air Conditioner - Will it cool the cabin w/o being plugged in?

Does anyone have an experience with trying to cool the cabin when parked outside ( in a parking lot not connected to a charger) prior to driving. If you turn on the Climate Control remotely while parked out in the sun, will it cool the cabin or drain the 12v battery? I was thinking about another thread wanting a "remote start" for the Ariya thinking it might be related to HVAC capability when only the 12v battery is used. How long could the A/C run off the 12v battery before draining it and could it actually cool the cabin?

IME, it will cool the cabin and not drain the 12V battery. I had an unexpected meeting yesterday come up at the end of the day a few minutes after telling the car to turn on the climate control. It ended up sitting there for over 2 hours keeping itself at temperature waiting for me. No issues, but it did cost me about 3% off the traction battery.

That's good news, dealer told me the opposite when I took delivery. He told me 12v would be used if charger was not connected. Which doesn't make sense to me, especially during winter. 12v battery would be drained in minutes.

I think many people have experienced the dealership staff sorta "talking out their butts" when it comes to EVs. Its one of the challenges for the manufacturers because the nature of EV buyers tends to skew towards internet researchers, so the customer may be more knowledgeable if the dealership has had minimal training.

At any rate, my experience is also the HVAC system uses the traction battery, not the 12v. I think this is a common design in EVs since HVAC uses very little energy compared to what is required to move the vehicle.

yea, i wouldn't believe a word they say at the dealership. The one thing that is obvious is none of them received any training whatsoever, they are clueless. The only thing I wished is that while plugged, the AC would use the power from the plug instead of the car's batteries, but that doesn't look to be the case. It always just uses the main batteries for AC

One of my other reasons why I want remote start is that when I’m out traveling somewhere while my Ariya sits at in the garage, I want the ability to remote start to get the 12V cranking and not let the car sit in the garage unattended for however long my vacay is…

The Ariya should maintain this automatically by itself - it charges the 12v from the traction battery as needed. It should do so even if the car is off so you wouldn't need to turn it on or remote start to initiate recharge of the 12v. The manual says there is a generic error it throws for the 12v, so it is monitoring it.

I usually turn on the A/C remotely when I walk out of my office and in the five minutes it takes to get to the car it is cooler. Of note I also have the window shade to help with the temps. I have not had it on for any elongated period.

I've used it like that a few times and haven't noticed any major drain, but I have also had it run for up to 30 minutes to cool the cabin to under 80 when interior temp was over 135.

30 minutes is a long time, though it shouldn't consume too much energy from your battery.

One thing the Ariya needs to help cool it faster is the ability to vent or open your windows remotely. Tesla already does this (sorry Hank!) and it greatly reduces the amount of time needed to cool off a hot car.

I thought there was a way to open all windows and sunroof with the key fob, but you couldn't be so remote that the key signal wouldn't reach...

You can do that via the key fob, but like you said you have to be somewhat close. From inside a building getting ready to head home, that's not an option. Moreover, you can't start climate remotely from key fob either.

Reviewing the charge before and after, I've never used more than 1% and normally only have it running 5 to 10 minutes. But glad to know I can go up to 30 or more if needed. But I agree, wish there were a way to vent the windows (maybe .5 to 1 inch max from the app. I know I can do it with the fob, but sometimes I'm not close enough to do that too.

Sorry, not sorry? 😉

I always have my moonroof partially opened to let the heat out. I have yet to use the remote HVAC since weather here has been cool and gloomy.

Can Tesla owners open their moonroof? 😅

What I'd be worried about is closing the moon roof remotely for when it starts to rain or such. I don't see an option for that in the app though.

We're already 85+ regularly here so I don't open the moon roof. I've used the moon roof opening mainly to poke through and wash the top of the car. Its a nice feature, but wasn't on my must haves since it is seldom used.
I really love the moon roof. I tend to use them a lot in the Spring - something worth celebrating here. I wish I could open and close it from the app though.

Our moon roof has the ability to pop the rear roof by one inch. I use this during highway driving or when parked. It would be nice if the rear moonroof can pop out more than one inch (2.5" would be ideal).

I use my panoramic moonroof almost exclusively. It's so gorgeous. Love love the windscreen! Money well spent!

My scheduled climate control works fine. When I called to ask how long that would actually run, before shutting off, they had NO ANSWER as ALWAYS! Technical support sucks for this truck and NO ONE knows what's going on!

Unless you own an Ariya, only you know with trial and error. To ask Technical Support, “how long that would actually run” seems trivial to me because there are many factors that will yield different results.

No, on any other car if you remote start the vehicle, it will run for a set time and shut off and you would restart it again, up to a set amount of times. Why should it be any different, ESPECIALLY since it's an electric vehicle and burning battery power. So there's NO EXCUSE to not knowing this answer.
