I can only recall one reviewer that found the brakes to feel a bit “spongy”. However multiple reviews I’ve read considered Ariya’s regen-friction braking to be well calibrated and blended. As cybergem99 commented, reviews of disappointing regenerative braking is likely referring to Ariya’s lack of true 1 pedal driving.

Apparently the brakes are engaged with the one-pedal driving when stopping. The brake pedal depresses by itself. Does this mean the brakes are wearing? Didn't expect that from regen braking.
No, or not necessarily. The Ariya (and other cars) don't work like Tesla in this respect. In the Tesla, if you press the brake you're using the physical brakes. In most (all?) other battery-electric cars, including hybrids like the Toyota Prius, and even the Gen 1 Honda Insight, pressing the brake pedal initially engages regen, not the physical brakes. If you press hard enough the car will blend in the physical brakes if necessary.
