Bad in car NAV direction

I am in SOCAL area and recently I cam across 4 different NAV problem that took me to wrong destinations. The Ontario International Airport was a big one. The NAV directed me to the back of the airport instead of the regular terminals. I like to use the built in NAV as much as possible due to the HUD integration, but my recent bad NAV experience really put me back to the Carplay. The build NAV is power by Google, but it's not the same like our smartphone's Google NAV.

I am also wondering about how to get our NAV system updated? Is it over the air, Wifi only or dealership?

I believe the map data is provided by Google, but navigation is Nissan's own algorithm. It does not give the same route as Google, and the route it offers (at least for shorter in city destinations) are usually not the route I would take.

The navigation is so bad that I stopped using it. It has taken me to the wrong locations, driven me in circles because it couldn’t find a location and made crazy detours to get to my destination. I never experienced that with google maps and that what I always use

yes, built-in Nav system is not great. I tried it out to see, but it kept telling me to turn around if I took backroad or short cut due to traffic. I usually study the route with map b/c I don't like listening to turn by turn instruction while driving. Never bother to use maps while driving if I can help it. If I get lost once, I learn new roads and that's good.
I've not had any serious mis-routings with it, and do use it (because I like the integration into the HUD and driver display) but I think the one in my 2015 Honda Pilot did a better job routing consistently. This one is on par with the one in my wife's 2014 Prius PlugIn, which is not a compliment. I rated it mediocre when I did the survey.

One thing I've started using recently and have found works remarkably well is the voice recognition. I can reliably rattle off an address to navigate to and have it be in the top 3 displayed for possible matches every time. (By saying, "Hello Nissan" Wait for it to respond. Then speaking naturally: "Navigate to 1371 Som Center Rd, Mayfield Heights, OH" as an example - that's an EVGo station in Cleveland.) So... It's kind of a mixed bag of good and bad.

Also... There are no toll booths on I-90 in New York, and haven't been for a few years now! Stop telling me that they're coming up soon!
Ever since that Nissan Connect update it wants me to use local roads even when I'm on the highway at times. Was fine before that, but I don't know if that update did anything to the navigation.
I don't think the voice recognition understands my accent. I kept setting it off when mentioned "something nissan" back then and couldn't turn it off.
even alexa/echo at home kept turning on even we didn't say anything remotely close to "trigger words"...

Maybe they trained it using midwesterners. A guy at work (Russian) can't use any of the voice systems reliably unless they allow him to switch to Russian.

I also discovered one doesn't have to use a full address. These also worked: "Navigate to nearest Whole Foods Market" and "Navigate to Coyote Cafe in Hamburg NY".
maybe I speak with too much texan dialect? My spouse has okie accent and siri came on at odd time..

Reminds me of the Star Trek movie where the young Chekoff (sp?) had to say a pass code that was “Victor Victor…, the computer wouldn’t recognize what he was saying. 🤣

I'm assuming OTA updates if you have NissanConnect but wifi-only if you don't.
We tried the built in Nav system for a recent road trip requiring one charging stop. The Nissan Nav system wanted to route us 20 miles out of the way to a charger instead of using one right on the route. Total fail.

I just ignore it's charger suggestions and charge where I had planned. After passing it's suggested charger location, telling it to recalculate the route will remove it from the list of destinations.

I was disappointed that the nav system on my Ariya is no better than the one on the 2014 rogue I traded in for it. I had always blamed the glitches on mine being an older system with no support. But the brand new Ariya is just as bad. On a trip to Savannah Georgia last week it showed me roads out that weren't, and had me circling in a residential neighborhood because it couldn't find the on ramp. Makes the heads up nav pretty useless. I had to switch back to my phone and had no problems after that. Nav is one thing Nissan has not gotten right.
I used it one time and it would initially not recalculate the route when I went a different route. It wanted me to turn around. Then later it gave me a new route, but longer than the one I was taking. If I need directions I just use Waze through Apple Car Play. I never really used the navigation directions in my former Murano either.

If it was trying to route you to a charger, it won't recalculate automatically. It will keep trying to route you to that charger, even when it's so far away you could never get there. To force it to recalculate, there's an icon on the lower-left with a squiggly arrow-line and little map on it. Hit that, then choose "Recalculate route" from the tiles. Or, say "Hello Nissan." Then, "Recalculate route"

I wasn’t trying to get to a charger. Ironically I was going to the Nissan dealership. But thank you for the tip on recalculating the route. I will try that.

Very carefully check your map and nav settings. Especially the ones about avoiding hwys and toll roads, etc. And check the fastest, shortest route setting.
