Bait and Switch?

I reserved a Platinum+ AWD e-force back in December of 2021. I have been waiting for nearly 18 months for this car to be delivered. A couple of days ago I got an indication that my reserved vehicle would be delivered to the dealer on May 23rd. I asked the dealer to send me an invoice for the total charges for purchasing the car. So they sent me an itemized statement. I immediately notice the MSRP is incorrect. My reserved MSRP was $60,190 (before the $1240 discount and the destination charge of $1335). The sticker price jumped $1845! Nissan (the factory) decided to add the following items that I did not configure: Carpeted Floor Mats / First Aid Kit $260, Illuminated Kick Plates $485., Exterior Ground Lighting &750, and Two-Tone Paint $350 (this charge I guess they decided to charge me twice for the color)! I did not want any of these options! So now the MSRP has gone to $62, 035 (before the discount and destination fee)! I thought I had to worry about junk fees from the dealer, but no it is junk fees from Nissan! This is the third car I have special ordered and the first time the manufacturer completely ignored my build and added stuff I did not want! When I first reserved the car I configured it with the $7500 tax credit in mind. Now that the credit is gone, I decided to purchase the car anyway! But with Nissan adding another $2000 worth of useless options, I am not going to purchase the car unless they sell it to me for the agreed MSRP. I contacted the consumer complaint department at Nissan and opened a case to see what they are going to do about this unauthorized change to my build. I don't have a lot of faith Nissan will do the right thing, so I will be back to square one with purchasing a new EV. I placed an order for a Lyriq a few months ago (figuring Nissan was never going to deliver this car after waiting about a year). The Lyriq will come with a $7500 tax credit and hopefully, the delivered build will match my build! What a disappointment and total waste of 18 months waiting on this car!
I am wondering if any of you have had this same "bait and switch" from Nissan.

In short, yes.

When I reserved I thought there was an option to add those accessories, but I declined all of them. I would not have expected nor wanted them with my car. But in my circumstance I switched from my Evolve+ reservation to a Premier that someone else declined. The Premier included floor mats and a paint charge. However, since these were installed at the factory (per the sticker) I don't think I would have much success asking for the charges to be dropped or removed. I'm pretty sure reserving the Premier (at the prior MSRP) already included the cost for paint and Premier labeled mats.

I'd be curious if any reservation holder was able to buy at the MSRP price listed on our reservation page, without any additional accessories.
I thought reservationists were supposed to be able to do some of that final configuration, but I guess not. It was not a custom order process, but perhaps more of a "reserve something close enough" process? Back during reservation time, it wasn't made especially clear that there would be upcharges for paint choice. I think only the Black Diamond and the Gunmetal colors did not cost extra (the upcharge ranges from around 350-395 for a few of the colors, to 695 for some other colors, and of course 995 for the elusive Passion Red). A few reservationists who took delivery very early on (like December 2022, January 2023) did not have mats added in, I think they just didn't have any yet back then, and some lucky people got FREE mats! :) I think they've been adding the spendy accessories on the Platinum trim vehicles. The exterior ground lighting sure looks nice in the pics that some forum members have shared. Part of me kind of wants to have it, but my practical side says "no thank you". However, if I did end up with the exterior ground lighting and other spendy items, I believe that my enjoyment of them would help me dismiss any worry about the extra money spent. The tax credit for the Ariya is not completely out of reach per the transition rule. As a reservationist, it may still be applicable in your situation.

When I preordered on day one I thought I was ordering and building my car. At that time we had very few choices, color and wheels.
Today if one were to go to Nissans web page you can BUILD an Aryia to order. Color wheels lighting camera storage etc etc. it appears that today one can truest order a build but when I ordered it was just a preorder
Still waiting.

Yes Nissan F'ed this entire process in every way imaginable. Back when most of us preordered in 2021 they claimed we'd have the opportunity to chose final options just prior to delivery. That hasn't happened. They've just randomly thrown in options and upcharges. Does anyone really want the First Aid kit??? I've been crushed since they told me in March no red but buy thankfully this forum and stalking Cars.com and Edmunds.com every day I was able to stumble upon a red platinum at a dealership in OH and was able to handle the sale over the phone and online. It's currently on a carrier to my house and hopefully should have it tomorrow.

I was fortunate enough to get my $1240.00 reservation discount as well as an additional $1000.00 discount off MSRP So the additional hidden charges that Nissan snuck in for $485 - illuminated kick plates, $395 up-charge for NL paint, and $250 for floor mats in total nearly became a wash when compared to what I intended to sign up for as I entered the Ariya reservation process in early April of 2022.

Honestly, this is not a Nissan issue. It’s an industry wide problem. i hear the same complaints with Lyriqs and others. Just yesterday, I went to Longo Toyota to finalize my build for both the 2023 Prius LE and Prius Prime XE.

The sales guy told me that whatever build i choose, i will be forced with the mfgr add ons. It’s a common practice in todays car buying especially when mfgrs are suffering from the Covid recovery. So, a basic Prius LE with nothing added is about $27kish. Once I take delivery, mfgr add ons will come out to $29K.

On the positive side, we are lucky that the stealerships are NOT marking up $5000 over MSRP like the way Hyundai and Ford were doing it then. Nissan HQ told their dealers to HOLD at MSRP.

Soooo, what would you prefer? Getting jacked by mfgrs add ons, or getting jacked by the stealership with huge markups? I rather get jacked by the mfgr add ons because I’ll get something tangible in return (kick plates, and carpeted floor mats)

BTW, I sat inside the BZ4X while at Longo Toyota yesterday. It’s total garbage. Our Ariya is 10X way better in quality and refinement. Everything inside the BZ4X was plasticity. GROSS! I showed the sales guy who took my Prius order to come look inside my Ariya. He was WOWED! I also showed the customer who took delivery of his new Prius. He didn’t know what the Ariya is until I told him it’s an EV. He loved it and asked a lot of questions about my Ariya.

Yes, an upside to factory or port installed accessories is that sometimes it is something that would require tools and some knowledge of how to wire it properly (illuminated kick plates, illuminated cargo scuff, exterior ground lighting), and on the window sticker it just adds the cost of the part, not a bunch of labor hours, too. Service centers probably charge a certain minimum number of hours for labor, even if it doesn't take that long. I enjoy DIY, but sometimes I don't really have the right tools and all.

First aid kit: $35
USB cables: $75

There's no labor factored into those prices, but they sure factored in profit margin! :D

😆😆😆 yeah for sure those ones don't count! Other forum members have joked that the USB cables better do double duty as gold chains!

Not B&S... see the Platinum+ thread where somebody posted a window sticker. The "starting at" price is correct but that never included the add ons and the premium color.

I'm not convinced this is true here in Florida. After my test drive a few months ago, I got the feeling that my original dealership was still marking up Ariyas $5K-$10K. I secretly switched to another dealership back in Nov 2022 (before it was locked down) with only $2.5K markup and all my convos since (including a few weeks ago... ) have not given me the confidence they've removed the markup.

Genesis dealers in FL are marking up GV60s that just arrived... $5K.
Super Premium Paint....... Congrats, that's the highest MSRP I've seen yet.

Ok. If all manufacturers and dealers do these unwanted markups, that does not mean it is ok or justified. Consumers must simply revolt on this behavior in every way possible: write the president of Nissan USA and Japan; write your representatives and state and federal consumer agencies; organize a class action; write your local and state media. It is only through collective consumer action that this ridiculous behavior will change. I have now initiated a back up plan of Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as a ten year backup plan, to let the dust settle on battery technology. They have five models with only dealer add ons YOU CHOOSE. Plus ten year warranty! I bought one of those early crt 200 lb HD Sony color TVs. Worthlessness in 5 years. Any Ariya lovers, I understand why you are in love....and don't want to mess with that....I think it is a great car, with great features, at an ok price.....but with a model selection that boggles the mind and launch that has clearly gone amuck. Haven't made final choice yet. Perhaps I'll start a separate string on BEV vs PHEV .... as a ten year dust settling strategy. I do know the downside of less power and torque etc but at 73 I'm not out laying strips. 😉. Cheers

Mitsubishi Outlander uses CHAdeMO. I crossed Outlander off my list because of it.

The only 2 states that I’ve read from this forum about MSRP markups for Nissan Ariya are Hawaii and Florida. It seems most of everyone else is selling at MSRP.

I have been suspecting the same thing. My order for the Platinum+ was placed on 17, November 21. To this day I have not heard one word from Nissan. My chosen dealership also is clueless. I was thinking about that binding contract. If it is worth anything, maybe I could sue Nissan for failure to deliver. Any good legal advice out there?
Free legal advice is worth every penny it costs. I’ve been waiting for my Aryia since it was announced and I watch the live reveal on July 15, 2020. I wasn’t able to order until launch day 16 months later. So it’s coming on three years and my dealer is still clueless. The thing that rubs me the most is not the delay not even the manufacture added options, it’s the fact that those of us that ordered are waiting. Wow there are actually platinum pluses on dealers lots, but they couldn’t figure out how to send the right car to the right dealer. Priceless.

There's also the possibility those cars on the dealer lots ARE the right car to the right dealer, but the reservation holder cancelled. Nissan has a sale waiting, so doesn't make sense to build a car just to sit. Demand for the Ariya is quite soft outside of the fans. My local dealerships have plenty sitting too. They're offering 1k discount off MSRP and $500 cash back for certain buyers (students, military, etc) in addition to Nissan's promotional financing. I wouldn't expect that level of incentives for a popular new model car.
