Big day for my Ariya - ceramic coat and level 2 charger finally installed!

Had a very busy day today but it was worth it because after making do for the past few weeks with just the OEM Nissan EVSE via a regular 110V socket - and experiencing how painfully slow that is - the electrician finally came to my house and got my Chargepoint Home Flex charger installed! And what a big difference it makes! Within less than 3 hours I got back about 20% charge when before the stock charger would give me only about half that overnight!

It was also super easy to get the Chargepoint to connect to their app, get the setup done, and start my first charging session too unlike some other chargers that I've heard can be a bit of a pain to get started with.

While the electrician was busy running my new circuit and installing the charger a detailer friend of mine took my Ariya and put on ceramic coat to help protect that lovely copper paint. Unfortunately the weather was super windy today so I could only snap some quick pics before tucking her safely back in the garage but I'm so happy with how things turned out I had to share them. It's so nice to have my Ariya all shiny and able to properly charge now :)

Next job will be getting some clear bra put on to protect that big plastic "grille" piece from any nasty rock chips once my friend can get some templates for the Ariya. Unfortunately it's so new nobody has PPF templates yet and no one in my area is skilled enough to do a custom cut job. Wanna keep her looking as nice as I can!

Wow it looks great! Nice compact charger, too. Another forum member posted about being careful with applying protective film on the grille area because of sensors? I'm not exactly sure which sensors are there but maybe film interferes with them...

Hmm. That's a fair point on PPF potentially interfering with the sensors. I know the general consensus is that you need to leave the ultrasonic parking sensors in the bumper uncovered with PPF but sounds like opinion is split on whether it affects radar sensors - based on other Nissans and Infinitis I would assume the radar is behind that grille piece. It'll be interesting to see if the PPF companies actually come out with a template for the Ariya grille - if they don't then that may be a concession that it's not a good idea to PPF the grille.

I wonder if that's also the reason Nissan only offers a partial hood and a charge cover PPF kit as a dealer-installed option?

Wow, that looks super slick! What brand ceramic coat did you used? Mejuairs? I should get mine done too! With my luck, it will rain the next day once I'm done! 😫

Here's more info about the front panel from another member ...

I see in the manual we're not supposed to put high pressure water on the sensor areas. Does this mean I can't take it to a car wash? My dealer is putting a Surface Pro coating on my copper on Monday. I hope it looks as good as yours.

My friend is a professional detailer and he said he used Xpel Fusion Plus for the ceramic coat on my Ariya. Thanks for the link to that forum thread - guess I'm not going to do PPF on the grille then. Just hoping Nissan made it from good material because it looks like a proper rock chip magnet :(

AFAIK, a typical automatic car wash should be fine - what you want to avoid is using something like a pressure washer and pointing it right at the sensors. I usually detail my cars by hand myself but I've taken my Armada through a car wash a couple of times on the road and never had an issue with the parking or radar sensors after - although it is built to take more abuse than the Ariya, I'll admit.

Car washes can present other issues though for cars with fancy driving aids like the Ariya - the auto sensing wipers might turn on inside for example if you don't remember to switch them to off beforehand. Car and Driver did an article recently on the kinds of issues modern cars and their sensors can end up with at the car wash:

Does ceramic coating really help in preserving the paint coating ?

Yes, it keeps the contaminants away from your paint. It’s like adding a sealer to your new kitchen granite countertops.

Good point. I have always used pressure washer at home. Now I will hand wash and maybe hose off or pressure wash from a distance for less pressure. I also have wipers on auto but will NOT use car wash.

It definitely helps versus standard waxing. It's not like clear bra where it'll protect the paint from really bad things like rock chips but it's great against dirt and grime. Think of it like a long-lasting, very slick wax. If professionally applied many ceramic coatings come with a five-year warranty.

Bugs and grime are much easier to get off. Dust is also way easier to handle - I keep two of my cars in a storage unit, one is ceramic coated, the other not, and if they're both dusty I can practically just use a California Car Duster to get all the dust off in a pass or two on the coated car while on the other enough is left I always have to finish up with quick detailer or waterless wash to get it decently clean.

Of course, you still need to care for the paint properly - the ceramic coat isn't magic and it'll fail prematurely if you treat the paint badly like run it through an automated, brush-type car wash all the time but treat it right and your paint will be very shiny for a good long time.

Did they put the ceramic coating over the grill area as well? Did it affect the sensors?
