Guys,

Drove the Ariya to one of those all automatic car washes.... wonderful! Want my Ariya to look great.
I get there... well.. gotta put on Neutral... hmmm ok.. how? I stop at the sign.. mess around with the "stick"... Nothing.

OK. I pull up my phone... youtube.. and in about 2 minutes and 10 car wait behind me, I found a video how to put the Ariya on "N"... uhu! Great.

But then, when the carwash system would start "moving my car", the Ariya handbrake would turn on. I turn it off... and try again.. the it will come on when the track started to move the Ariya..

Hmmm ok. not it is 4 minutes on the line... 15 cars behind me.. everyone being patient with the fancy EV owner.
I start to sweat bullets and wondering if I should walk to the back of the line and tell everyone to back out, as I would like to get out of there!!
My son next to me laughing didnt make things better in any way.

OK. FINALLY, I had a moment of brilliance. (note that I dont look at the dashboard much these days - I got used to the HUD).
AND the answer was there.. the "automatic brake hold" feature (A) was green on the screen.

So I disabled it... and the handbreak didnt turn on anymore!

UHUUHUHU.
The line started moving... cars being washed... and at the end of line I hear the joy of my comrades through honks and whistles.
Life is good.

Lesson learned: Turn off you automatic brake hold before heading to the carwash.

Cheers,

I personally haven’t used auto car wash in ages, since 2005?? not sure I know how now :) Lately with the Ariya, either dealer did a quick wash or I handwashed with water/soap where dirty, more like spot washing 😋

I don’t fully wash my Ariya anymore unless it’s absolutely filthy. Since it has a coat of ceramic wax, I use a damp microfiber towel with tad of Macguiars soap wash, and hand wipe off the dirt/dust. I’ll do sections at a time each day and spend no more than 10 mins.

One day, I clean the windshield/windows. Another day, I’ll clean the top roof, rear window, and rear hatch. Another day, I’ll detail the black glossy wheels. Another day, I clean the rest of the body panels. It’s not conventional to do it this way but I save lots of time from having to leaf blow the water off the car after wash.

We’ve used auto car washes rather frequently and still have trouble getting the Ariya into neutral. I wish it was a push button, like Park. Quite embarrassing when people are waiting. And after being flustered trying to get into neutral , it takes a bit to remember to release the Autohold. Fortunately our car wash attendants are pretty patient.

Nearly the same thing happened to me except my sales guy told me about how to put it in natural and I practiced before I got there. I thought I was good. That stupid auto brake got me. The button to turn it off is exactly behind my steering wheel so I couldn’t see it. He guy running the crash made 10 cars all back up about 15 feet so I could back up and leave in humiliation. NOTE: when I finally did go back, the auto sensing wipers were on!!!!! OMG! 🤣

You got three of the steps. Another poster added the wipers. I also fold the mirrors.

It is definitely too much too learn while the wash is trying to pull you in. So practice:
While waiting in line, disable auto hold with the button on the lower drivers side of the dash. Press the button on the driver’s arm rest to fold the mirrors. Then push up on the wiper stalk to make sure it is not in auto (rain sensing). When you get to the wash, shift to neutral by moving the selector forward for half a second WITHOUT pressing the side button. It’s like shifting to reverse but without the side button-plus you have to hold it a bit.

It seems like a lot, but it becomes routine with practice. Even so I wish the engineers provided a feature that would perform the steps for you.

Having owned a Leaf for 10 years, I remembered to check on the neutral procedure before going into a car wash for the first time in the Ariya. What I didn’t know about was the Brake Hold while in neutral. I haven’t used brake hold much, but I could see myself forgetting that it was on someday and embarrassing myself. Thanks for the tip!! 👍🏼

The same thing happened to me after I figured out N position, really should be simpler. The attendant said I've never seen a car like this before! It was embarrassing and freaky when the car was not moving in N. Whew once I turned off the brake all was fine. I did later find this info in my manual.

I went through a car wash and followed all 4 steps (auto-hold, N, side mirrors, wipers), but when I came out, the rear wiper was dead - just hanging straight down. It would barely moved when switched on. I tried gently rotating it back to the window area, but the motor barely moves it.

I'm getting it looked at next week at the dealer, hopefully I don't need another specialist to repair it.

BTW - there is a "rear link" option for the rear wiper. It's possible this was on and when I was getting into Neutral the car was briefly in Reverse, which would have potentially made the rear wiper move. Not sure if that setting is dependent on auto-sense being on in general, but beware - could be a step 5.

The "reverse link" is tied to the Auto setting. I noticed this AM when my front wipers finished and I heard a squeaky noise in the back. I never really look in the back while driving most of time, unless I think someone tailgating me ..

Exactly! On the Ariya, the automatic brake hold will engage even in neutral, which prevents the car from rolling in an automatic car wash. Disabling it before putting the car in neutral solves the problem and lets the conveyor move the vehicle smoothly. It’s a common little gotcha for EV owners, so turning off brake hold beforehand makes the whole car wash experience stress-free.
