EV startups are burning through cash

It's not looking good for EV startups, especially lately with them getting deeper in the hole.

In the coming years we could start seeing them closing doors.

Which do you guys think will survive?

Yikes. Like the article mentioned, surviving might mean being bought out or acquired. Hmmm...

It would be funny if Tesla bought Lucid because Lucid is headed by a former Tesla exec:ROFLMAO:

😆 that would be pretty funny! Kind of like when the kids move back to their parent's house!
Rivian is full of ex Tesla folks. If Rivian was bought out by Tesla, it would be a killer combo. The crossover market is over saturated but the large 3 row SUV has almost no competition.

Kia EV9 will have Rivian’s R1S for lunch.

Anyone noticed the dashboard of the EV9 looks similar to our Ariya?

Even though I’ve owned a few Kias (last being a Telluride), I don’t think Kia will be too successful with their EVs. Niro EVs and EV6s are sitting on lots and being discounted $2K-$4K and still not selling while Telsas, ID.4s, Mach-Es seem to sell nicely.

I want a Telluride EV. I don’t want the abomination that is the EV9. The Telluride is a quiet smooth riding SUV with billions of features and simple to use controls. EV9 is just an EV6 as a minivan and EV6s have poor sales.

Not sure that I would ever consider comparing the the KIA EV-9 to the Rivian R1S as each car caters to an entirely different market segment. Might as well compare the virtues of a VW ID.4 vs a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo.
If anyone needs a 7 seater SUV, they will cross shop all available models (EVs vs ICE).

Not everyone is a weekend warrior where they must have R1S. Majority of the 7 seat buyers are soccer moms who rather drive an SUV than a minivan. If priced appropriately, I definitely think EV9 will steal R1S thunder.

I just saw a cherry red R1S drive by my neighborhood about an hour ago. It's gorgeous. Their office is nearby where I live. Rivian is everywhere here.

EV9 will be a giant turkey. The base trim has a sub 200-mile range, 0 to 60 in 9-ish seconds, and is $56K. For that same price you can get a fully loaded Telluride which is 10x the car that the EV9 is.

Who does the EV9 appeal to? I don't know many. It's too expensive. Too little range. Too slow. And worst of all.. it's an EV with the weird EV-like interface and fewer features compared to the ICE counterparts. Folks want a Telluride EV not a disaster that is the EV9. EV6s don't sell and neither will the EV9.

More importantly as a long time Kia owner... the buying demographic has always been sub-prime folks. Only recently have they moved upmarket but the dealerships are still far behind and folks dump their Tellurides due to poor Kia service. This demographic is not buying a 7 row EV.

I suspect you may be right on all counts. $84-86K for a long range Rivian R1S vs $73K (TBD) for an inferior top tier EV-9? Value/$ the Kia IMO should never be mentioned in the same conversation.

I will hold my judgement until as I see the EV9 in person.
This weekend, there is an EV Convention in Long Beach. I will attend and hope Kia will be at show.

As for the EV6, it’s a funky crossover not worth talking about. People love SUVs, not crossovers.

Hope you have a chance to view lots of EVs this weekend at Expo Hank. Please let us know your overall impressions. I attended the Expo in Seattle last summer and honestly I was a bit underwhelmed. So hoping this years Expo show in Long Beach is worthwhile.

I would think the EV show in SoCal will be huge since the EV adoption in SoCal is bigger than anywhere else in the US.

The EXPO was so awesome! It's way better then the boring LA Auto Show.

At the Expo, Cadillac, GM, Nissan, Fisker, and Mercedes were a no show.

Toyota, Lexus, Kia, Tesla, VW, Mitsubishi, Ford, and Volvo were there.

I had a chance to test drive the RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime. Between the RAV4 Prime and our Nissan Ariya, Ariya is way better all around. I was surprised.

The Kia EV9 was on display but no one was allowed to sit inside. I do think EV9 will do well.

I think Kia will do well with the EV9 even if I'm not overly fond of their cars. They seem to know how to hit the right market, and their 800V architecture is nice.

Just got home from a road trip (in the RV). I saw a handful of Teslas, Mach E's (which are pretty common around here, including a pair of white Mustangs traveling together, one Mach-E and one ICE, which passed me three times - I go slower, but they have to stop more often), Bolts, and a Rivian pickup. I also saw a Porsche Taycan near Detroit, passing me, and then saw it again about 15 minutes later on the side of the road with a flat tire and some poor gal sitting in the grass on her phone... Beautiful car though!

Love the Telluride and almost everything except the low end power and maybe Kia dealerships. It’s the perfect family SUV IMO. The EV9 is just a horrible EV-ized version. Kia should have followed Genesis - who converted their GV70 by simply ripping out the gas drivetrain. The GV70 EV has stellar reviews which is no surprise because the gas version is an award winning car.

That EV9 looks…. cheap. Tellurides at $50K are fully loaded with Nappa leather, dual moonroofs, etc. Those pics make it look like a Sienna.

As for the Primes… there’s a perfect definition of cheap. I’ve owned two R4P and they are sub $33K cars. Cheap interior, cheap audio system, cheap material, etc. I know they improved everything in 23 and included 6.6 kW charging and upgraded infotainment and audio but it’s not a $48K SUV. The biggest selling point is the drivetrain and real world 38mpg.

BTW, guess who I saw at the Expo?
Kyle, the YouTuber, who did not speak highly of the Ariya. He and that gal in the video was there together. I thought about approaching him to give him my opinion on the Ariya as an owner. I relented since he's not worthy of my time....

I had no idea BMW came out with i7 EV sedan. It looks really nice but very expensive. $125K!
