So.. nissan only gives 6 months of "nissan connect premium" with the remaining 4 1/2 years consisting of the less featured "nissan connect".
With "premium" offering these additional features:

Does anyone know what the cost is to continue having access to these features after the 180 day trial period?
If the subscription is yearly, is a prorated refund possible upon trade-in?

If you log into your Nissan account -> Manage Vehicle -> Connected Services -> Manage Account -> Manage Subscription
You can see the subscription options and pricing, both for month-to-month as well as an annual rate.

You can also see the subscription options and prices here:

Finally, Nissan also gave a special offer you had to contact them about within 30 days of taking ownership. The offer gave you another 3 months of Premium connectivity for 50% off. In short, it was an offer to get you to enroll and put your credit card information into the account so that renewing/extending subscriptions is easy.

I wonder what if you don't have a smartphone? Then you can't use the app and car is useless?

Nah, then the car just works like a car. If you don't own a smart phone you're not interested in any of the smart/remote features.

When I had my Leaf there was nothing in the "premium" subscription that I really needed. I thought the subscription price was outrageous since all I desired was to remote charge, and to see my battery level, both which were on the standard app. The removal of the remote locking/unlocking to the premium annoyed me, but I could always use the fob for that.

I suspect it will be the same with the Ariya. Happily this car comes with an automatic proximity lock/unlock setup through the internal menu. I already have the unlock- at-approach function set up, and I love it although it took some time getting used to it.

Can anyone confirm this? That using the regular nissan connect without subscription will still work for checking on charging status / battery %?

Go here:

This is the page for people with FWD. There's a big pair of boxes at the top. If you're getting AWD, be sure and click on the Platinum+ one instead.
You can open the different section down lower and see what features are included.

Charge status is included in the "Select" package, which you get for free for 5 years.

I think nowadays, the trend of subscription is to enhance the experience... too fancy, yet we can't DIY troubleshoot ourselves, seems like a rip-off..
If I have the fob with me, I just push the button on the handle to unlock/lock >> the automatic proximity you mentioned? I don't remember if I set that up, or just defaulted by the car menu. Never had a fancy car like this one, so I guess I'm stepping up :p
