To my understanding, it is best to not charge EVs to 100%, at least not most of the time. If you are taking a long trip you might want to do 100% but not generally. At least that is my understanding. So, for the Ariya, what is the recommended charge range for everyday use? High end and low end, I think you are not supposed to fully drain it either on a regular basis.

Also, if you are not supposed to normally charge to 100%, shouldn't it be designed to auto shut-off at 90% or whatever it is supposed to be? Then, when you want 100% charge, you select an override. Shouldn't it be something like that???

Yes. My Chevy Bolt lets you set the max charge level and even schedules it so it's done charging at whatever time you want to leave the house in the morning. Hopefully, my Ariya will have an update sometime that gives us that.

From what I’m hearing from fellow members, Nissan does not have the capability to schedule your set charge (setting at 80, 90, 95% etc). I’m sure it’s a simple OTA update down the road.

Okay, so we don't have the set charge option, at least not yet. Sigh... So, what are the approximate recommended numbers for charge on the high and low end? Like generally stay above 20% and below 90%, something like that?

I charge exclusively at EVGO. Most times, it will be as low as 10-20%. All times, I charge up to 95%. I don’t like waiting around for another 15 mins or so just to get it to 100%. It’s painfully slow. I’m satisfy with 95% as my set charge (about 47 mins) while waiting. If you have home charger, you have the flexibility to charge anytime on the whim. Just set it and forget it.

But that's my point, I can't "just set it and forget it". It will charge to 100% if I don't stop it. As far as I can tell.

I also read somewhere if you charge at home up to 100% it has no bad effect at all since it charges over hours not minutes.
If that is true, I'd like to see this confirmed, but that is not my understanding.

I just watched Nissan Official Video Titled Nissan Ariya Quick Charge: Quote: Frequent use of Quick Charger should be minimized to Prolong Battery Life. video is on youtube and Nissan site.

Yeah, and? I expect to almost never use a rapid charger. But that doesn't say anything about whether you should or shouldn't charge to 100% using an L1 or L2 charger.

I forget where I read it but I wrote it down it said VW to 80% Ford to 90% and GM and Nissan said NO issues going to 100% , I will try to find article ? I will only be topping off in my garage maybe twice a week. Good thing is WARRANTY on Battery is 8yr or 100,000 miles

On the Nissan Connect app it shows your charging status in miles and percentage. You have the option to stop charging if you choose to.

I haven't even set up the app yet, LOL. I need to do that. I guess I need to go back to the dealership and have them give me some basic training, LOL. Can you set the app to stop charging at a certain level? I just got my 240V outlet installed today. Yeah on a Sunday.

You can’t set the app to stop charging at a certain level. You can schedule your charge though, with specific start/stop times.

Hey Hank, how often do you charge? I have been charging exclusively at EVGo as well for the time being with my Engage, but I have to charge every 3rd day or 2 days. But I usually go for 80% or 85%. I drive around 40+ miles per day.

To those folks who are waiting for the "max charge limit" feature to be granted to us in some future OTA update... don't hold your breath.

You don't think Nissan had enough time in the last 2 years of delays to add that relatively simple software feature?

The simple fact is, Nissan removed that feature from the Leaf in 2014, and never gave it back. No hilltop mode either which annoys me since I live on top of a hill. For whatever reason, likely legal, Nissan will not give us the option to choose charge level. You get 100%, every time. If that's not what you want, then it's up to you to figure out how to manage the charge level. That's what I've been doing with my Leaf for years now. Yes, it's very annoying and there is no reason at all to assume Nissan is going to change this for the Ariya, unless we complain about it.

I charge about every 6 days if I don’t go anywhere outside of normal driving like LA or San Diego. I usually drive within Orange County.

Yesterday, I charged to 95% before heading down to Oceanside, CA to pick up my buddy and then head over to Pala Casino to catch the UFC fights last night. I was hauling at 80mph+ down the Hwy 5 stretch using my cruise control. I came back home with just 34% SoC or 89 miles remaining. Basically, I drove 200 miles last night round trip. Since last recharge, it said I did 3.1 mile/kWH. I was on Standard and Eco modes.

Since you have the Engage with short range battery, stop worrying and charge up to 95% if time permits. It’s a pain in the ass to have to recharge every few days. I do it up to 95% every time I get a chance. I’m lucky that I have two EVGo locations within about 3 miles that have 350kw chargers. I refuse to use L2 chargers.

Ariya owners need not worry about charging their battery to 100% SOC because Nissan has already built in a safety factor into their charging software. That’s why Nissan states in your owners manual that you can safely charge to 100% on a daily basis. Attached is a screen shot segment of a Bjorn Nyland YT range test video. In this range test he drives a 91- (87 KW useable ) Ariya until the on board computer indicates approx. 0% SOC. However note in the charging session that followed, the system automatically shuts itself down just shy of 80 KW . Seems to be a clear indicator of why Nissan has no concern charging the Ariya battery until the on board charging software automatically shuts itself down.
