I Totaled my Ariya$ Am I the First. Hi friends. I totaled my Ariya on my way home from work Friday morning. The car is always in pro pilot mode cause I’m always on highway. It usually works. I TOOK OUT A TELEPHONE POLE. The auto breaks failed. It almost killed me. What should I do.

I assume you contacted the insurance company? Auto braking is for vehicles and pedestrians, not really for stationary objects. I imagine the airbags worked.

I hope you have gap insurance !
I was on the Laguna Beach Canyon Road this afternoon. Traffic was bumper to bumper but at one point the traffic was flowing at 20-25 mph. The car in front of me stopped for a brief second. I had plenty of distance ahead me to be able to react and tap on my brakes. Before I could tap on my brakes, my Ariya SLAMMED on the brakes by itself. My seat belt shoulder strap locked in. The inertia caused my phone to fall to the bottom. The instrument cluster lit up with warning lights. The moment it slammed on the brakes, I immediately knew it was not me that applied the brakes.

I did not have heart attack this time like I did last time when I slowly backed my car into the garage to park. I supposed from experience, I know what it feels like when the crash avoidance braking kicks in. Man, today was brutal. It was a complete slammed on the brakes type of stopping!

The traffic avoidance with the emergency braking seems a bit too sensitive. I was under control and had plenty of distance ahead of me to apply the brakes gently on my own.

Note: the weather was gloomy and balmy with light drizzles.

Lesson learned? I’m getting myself a dashcam! Will wait for Prime Day coming soon! Garmin usually have it on sale on their website during Prime Day as well..

Wow! I'm glad you're okay! FWIW, it's the first I've heard about, but they've been out long enough in EU that someone over there likely beat you to it.

Oh my goodness! So glad that you survived to tell the tale! Ariya took the hard punch for you.

It stops for everything except objects like telephone poles 🤷🏻‍♂️ come on Nissan there everywhere

Wow. We wish you a speedy recovery!

I don't think the Ariya can slam on the brakes while going 50+mph prior to a crash into a telephone pole.

The road you were on was probably not mapped for PP2?

I had the exact experience last week driving north on I-5 before the 22 hwy exit. There was enough distance for me to stop behind the car in front, and while I was braking to slow down the emergency brake also kicked in causing a very sudden and jerky stop with loud noise. Some other times, it gives me loud warning beeps before I still have plenty of distance to slow down. The emergency warning & braking work well, but it's too cautious unnecessarily. I guess Nissan tunes the system for the general requirements with slower reaction than my driving.
I have as multiple significant near misses with Pro Pilot. I have warned Nissan about this but they literally will not listen. Someone is going to die.
None of those auto drive systems are really very good, it’s like turning the wheel over to a 16 year old. It’s also not driving the car, you are responsible. That’s why it’s watching your eyes or making you hold the streaming wheel..
I think everyone knows that already.
However Nissan pro pilot has critical issues. Self driving that suddenly and rapidly turns off the road. Disengages without a bing sound, on a corner when you are on the outer edge of the highway and it literally flies off the side of the road.
Auto breaking that accelerates at randomly directly into the car in front at high speed.
Yes I stopped all of those but don’t tell me to pay attention or hold the wheel or that not to expect much as they are not that good. This is just not fit for purpose and someone will have a fatal crash.
Fit for purpose… sounds like lawyer speak. Everyone that bought that option is financing research and development as far as I’m concerned. Everyone should understand they bought into something that is half baked and potentially dangerous. I drove 2 miles with Tesla auto drive and felt like there was several close calls. There was zero chance I was going to pay for an even less dependable Nissan version.
Nissan makes it very clear in legal terms, you’re still the responsible driver.

Innovation will not stop just because "you warned Nissan company about potential auto deaths ahead".

Our Ariya has many great driver assistance technology to help prevent accidents. Nothing is ever bulletproof. Not even L3/L4 autopilot.

As for PP2, we dont know the details what caused the accident in this particular case. It could be a raccoon crossing the street while the driver made an evasive maneuver to avoid hitting it. Who knows.

Since we are on the subject of deaths, this person keeps a log of Tesla related traffic deaths. Should Tesla stop innovating because these families are suing Tesla?

BTW, ebikes are very dangerous too. It's very heavy and goes much faster than Greg Lemond can peddle. These kids riding double, or sometime triple on their ebike without their helmets on. I had near accidents with kids on their ebike cruising inside the shopping strip parking lots. They dont obey stop signs and they expect drivers to yield to them. Our laws are behind the curve as it relates to children with ebikes but these kids love their ebikes
