I Totaled my Ariya$ Am I the First. Hi friends. I totaled my Ariya on my way home from work Friday morning. The car is always in pro pilot mode cause I’m always on highway. It usually works. I TOOK OUT A TELEPHONE POLE. The auto breaks failed. It almost killed me. What should I do.

Wish you a speedy recovery, and glad no one was killed.
Everyone should be aware that self driving is still level 2, which requires driver's attention to take over any time. My Shamu only has ProPilot Assist and helps me relax on long trip but I am always aware and watching - Quite often it gets too close to the edge during transition between straight and curve on freeway at speed 70+mph, and I'm always ready to take over if it seems dangerous.
Also, I'd never trust ProPilot on small local roads like this. The other day, my Shamu somehow read 75mph speed limit in a school zone - Imagine what could have happened if I'd let self driving taking over.

I think everyone knows that already.
However Nissan pro pilot has critical issues. Self driving that suddenly and rapidly turns off the road. Disengages without a bing sound, on a corner when you are on the outer edge of the highway and it literally flies off the side of the road.
Auto breaking that accelerates at randomly directly into the car in front at high speed.
Yes I stopped all of those but don’t tell me to pay attention or hold the wheel or that not to expect much as they are not that good. This is just not fit for purpose and someone will have a fatal crash.
I haven't had any bad experiences with my Pp2...I love it on highways during my long journeys. Over 1100 miles. I love the pp2! I guess it's mainly about the operator using it properly? 1🤔

IME, PP 1.5 on my Evolve+ works quite well. It'll very occasionally do something unwise, but I can usually figure out why. e.g. It turns off if the car in front of me turns unexpectedly, and if I'm in slow traffic letting it control my speed and the car in front of me changes lanes, it'll want to speed up to full speed to catch up, which isn't always great, but I know why it's doing it and have learned to watch out for that and turn it off if I see that situation approaching. There are a few other things like that. Partly, it's learning curve.

When it speeds up, is it accelerating to a speed the cruise is set at, or is it accelerating past that point?

To the point the cruise is set at. If the slowdown is on the Interstate though, that can be considerable.

Another example of correct behavior, but not what a human would do: If a car is turning, say, onto a driveway that car will slow down quite a lot. The Ariya sees that and slows down accordingly, but a human driver wouldn't because the human driver knows that car is going to be out of the way very quickly. That's another case where I'll turn it off or just give it some gas (uhh.... you know ...) to keep it from doing that.

Holy moly, I’m glad you are ok! The Pro Pilot for me is mostly good (I can only use the green), but even this weekend whilst driving on a road I always drive on, it suddenly decided to switch off, and when it did that it suddenly sped up and veered to the right, thankfully I was able to correct it, but it was a bit of a heart in my throat moment. All this tech is just in its infancy. Get well soon!

I've never had any issues with the PP2 and pray that I never do. When it shuts off by itself (turns green color) I'm not caught off guard bc I'm aware of the road conditions and weather and I'm alert on when I need to put my hands back on the steering wheel. Again, no issues. I love the PP2 on my Ariya.
@XXXJPUNXXX wish you a speedy recovery. hope your insurance work out with the car.
I know the feeling of brakes applied not by you. My Forester did that a few times, and it's always a near miss.
Have not used the PP2 as I'm on city streets all the time but I doubt I will like it.

When I read @XXXJPUNXXX post just now I had never read any comments from them before on this forum. Call me a sceptic, but I was compelled to research prior posts. It’s seems coincidental to me that he’s only posted on this forum twice now and his first was about 6 weeks ago when he listed his Premier was for sale. Seems he was looking for someone to take over his payments. Now it’s a total loss? Blaming an accident on PP2.0 that requires driver intervention at a moments notice? …….just sayin!

It's not intended for local streets. However the system does switch between modes during use.

He posted pictures of the car and his injuries from after the accident. It doesn't excuse over-reliance on the driving aid, but it appears to have been a severe accident.
That telephone pole looks half rotten- good thing you took it out before it hurt someone. Also, strange spot to put an IV in a healthy male with good veins. Sorry about your rude discovery- i used the PP and turned it off- did not inspire confidence.
If I can get this straight, pro-pilot on, while on city street and it crossed over to the wrong side of the roadway towards oncoming traffic and hit the pole? Wow! Glad you're okay and that it didn't take someone else out with the pole.

Yup- appears he crossed the yellow line into on coming traffic and finally found a utility pole on the opposite side of the street. With PP2.0 always engaged ( as he claims ) the Ariya’s PP2.0 lane departure warning would have sounded several seconds prior to impact with the utility pole and he would of had plenty of time to recover everything considered. Even if he was traveling at 50 MPH (which is likely faster than the speed limit from the looks of that street) [mod: been inattentive to his driving], ? , Regardless IMO the car did not overpower the steering from his control and was not to blame here. [mod: deleted].

It will be interesting to see if @XXXJPUNXXX comments on my post(s) and challenges me for calling BS on his claim that his Ariya was at fault for this accident.

If you read the data that is collected, with PP2, the driver's head position and whether the eyes are closed or not is recorded and available. One may or may not want that data.

From his description, he indicates Pro pilot was on, but not that he was using PP2. Based on pictures of the area, PP2 should not be an option. Other interesting observation from the picture, no skid marks, no tire marks on either side of the pole. Even with ABS breaking, wouldn’t there be evidence of a panic sto?

Disagreements and some challenging of events as stated are okay, but please keep to what's apparent from the description, the photos, and leave off the inuendo and unfounded accusations. In particular, review Rule 2 here:

I've done some cleanup of recent comments in this thread. Thanks.
