I made my first attempt at charging Level 3 yesterday, and it was an EPIC FAIL!,

I went to a Flo charging station. I plugged in the Combo adapter and I heard it lock. I went to activate the session, and the unit faulted. The screen said to unplug and try again.

To my horror, the release button would not depress, and I could not remove the adapter.

I checked the lock mode on the car - unlocked
Tried unlocking the car, which was not locked… no joy.

I pushed, pulled, twisted, held my mouth in different positions… WTF!

I called the number on the charger… the bored voice on the other end said the unit was off line and he couldn’t see it. “Sorry, you’re on your own“, and he hung up.

I spent an hour flapping about. The manual describes a white lever above the charge port on the inside of the fender (Page CH-35 in the main manual). Impossible to see and reach….Fortunately, I was parked next to a hardware store, so I bought a flashlight and screw driver… and headed back to the car.

I screwed around for another 30 minutes, with no luck. I could see the white lever, but the screw driver was not long enough or stiff enough to actuate the lever…

After 90 minutes in -3 degrees and snow, I finally tried the fob again. This time I locked the car, then unlocked it… hey Presto!!! The port unlocked!

I can’t believe what hoops I had to jump through to not get a charge.

Anyway, I went back to the same charger today, and there was a young couple with a shiny blue Ariya, hood up with the manual in one hand and a screw driver in the other. They had the bored Flo help desk on the line. It was their first charge…

Can you imaging what a hero I was?

Same happened to me at an Electrify America station. I plugged in and it wasn't working so I tried to unplug. Same problem. I called their support number and was told to look in the manual which I didn't' have with me. After trying many different things, I finally locked the car with the fob, then unlocked it and presto. That should be in the manual. The EA support person took note for future callers.

Read under EVGO titled Forum lots of same info: Bottom line Dealers should be aware of fob on/off on/off trick. This happened to me 3 times (no issues last 30 days)but by reading info here worked with FOB and it released. There is much knowledge that has been shared. Time to read and follow or also ask questions. good Luck, I also tell other people at charging stations even if not ARIYA just in case it happens. Spread the word , I might carry a screwdriver in future just in case and I will try to locate this mystery white lever?

What kind of screwdriver? Flathead Philips?

It sounds like this is not uncommon then

I think anything long enough and stiff enough the move the lever… I put my home charger in and tried to actuate the release, but not sure exactly how it works…. It is about 8 inches back from the access, and really hard to see when your hands are in the way.

Apparently Teslas can have the same problem, but they have a cord or cable attached to the release in the trunk. Nissan could do the same (?)

A video by Nissan demonstrating the release would also be a help.

Yup — same happened to me — both times I tried the local EvGo charger. Invokes more than a bit of panic when you think your vehicle is now locked to the charging station. Had to call them both times. Not sure what the reliable unlock method is — key fob multiple times worked in one case and don’t recall what the escape mechanism was In the other case. I now have the car set to not lock when charging but not sure if that even helps. Right now I’m gun shy about attempting another charge. L2 charging at home has no issues.

Nissan DOES need to address, because if FOB trick or screwdriver deal does not work you cannot be towed since you are connected to a pump.Ariya owners don't need to pull up to a pump and cross their fingers every charge🤞

Use your fob to lock and unlock your doors. You may have to do this as many times as possible until you’re able to remove the nozzle from your car charging port. I wrote up an instruction on the EVGO thread.

Newbies need to read this forum for tips and tricks across all threads. With charging, start with EVGo.

After all said and done, I really fault the Nissan dealerships for not educating their EV buyers. If they have a poor user experience, chances are they will fault Nissan for it.

Still need to locate lever as last chance to avoid being stuck if FOB trick doesnt work. Pop open front hood look under lift hinge 6-8inches back. There is no screwdriver slot it is just a white lever to push down clockwise???might be tricky to do.. This location if needed is a JOKE!!! Can someone please take a picture ,so carry a 8 inch screwdriver to be safe and EVERYONE double check to be sure you are in UNLOCK mode.I have had no issues at pump in 30 days.

This is the location, but very hard to see, and even harder to photograph. Also, the lock works by pushing out a metal pin above the latch on the charger handle… this blocks the lever from moving upward to release from the charger port.

The white “lever” seems to flop around when the charger is disconnected or unlocked… maybe there is resistance to push against when the charge lock is actuated. I don’t want to screw around with it too much for fear of breaking something…

I have attached this thread to the EVGO thread with the latest update on this subject matter. Something to cross reference for the newbies.

Good to know all these secrets of charging (and not charging!). We always charged our Leafs at home, and you could just unplug whenever. With the ID.4 it locks (can unlock by several ways, but we just wait for it to finish). I suppose if we were to charge at a public charger, the idea of it locking is so some stranger can't just waltz on by and unplug cars willy-nilly.

FWIW, I have mine set to never lock since I charge in my garage. It doesn't lock when using my home charger, but it still locks when using DCFC. I suspect they really don't want you unplugging while there's high amperage and voltage current flowing. It would have been good if Nissan had covered the unlock methods in the charging videos.
