Registration Question - Illinois

Any other Illinois EV owners out there? Does anyone know if electric vehicles in Illinois are required to have the Electric Vehicle license plate (with the EL on it), or is that just an optional vanity option?

When I picked up my Ariya on Friday, the dealer handled the registration and license plate, and gave me a regular passenger plate and number. The registration fee they collected on behalf of the state included the $100 EV surcharge. So all seems fine, I just wanted to make sure I don't need any outwardly identifiable sign the car is registered as an EV.

I also later noticed that the registration form has the former Secretary of State's name on it... but maybe they just haven't rolled out new papers since the change took effect in January? I trust the dealer handled this bread-and-butter administrative matter correctly... just in all the excitement of the moment, I didn't completely focus to ask.

As of '22 Illinois no longer requires the EV plate, just the EV fee. you're G2G.

That said my dealer ordered an EV plate, so...

Thanks, @dafish !
And now for my next administrative hurdle... getting my City Vehicle Sticker (which I suspect is a local racket, it's Chicago after all). The agent couldn't put through the application because the Ariya is so new, it's not in their system. Hmmm, this is gonna be fun.

Expect to be going to the Daley center paying for, and getting refunds about, your tickets bc you're DEFINITELY gonna get ticketed for not having the sticker. The fact that the Department of Revenue (Yes, that's what they're ACTUALLY called) attendant won't be able to find the make & model of the vehicle won't stop them from giving you a ticket nor will it give them a hint as to why you don't have a sticker.

I love Chicago but I'm so glad (for that reason & a few others) that I have my Ariya in the burbs. BUT, when the weather breaks it would be awesome to have an Ariya meetup someplace!

LOL. That's exactly what I want to avoid, @nilahiii. Tried again at the City Clerk's office and a manager was able to manually enter the make/model. Sanity wins. Though it wasn't before she looked the car up on her iPhone to verify it was real. Ariya meet up would be fun!

My ticketing worry is I'm not wearing a front plate. I don't want to put one on & it wasn't on my Premiere when I bought it so...🤷‍♂️ I heard that they were going to make it optional but I don't remember seeing it passed for the state yet.
the bill timed out before passing. DOA.
