Replace FRONT TIRES 8000 miles.Warranty Turned Down LOW Miles

1063 Views 44 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  PNWariya
Just picked up my Ariya from Nissan it has 5300 miles in 4 months. Dealer said front tires were in (yellow CAUTION) area replacement soon. They said front tires ALWAYS wear down quicker with FWD. 5/32 depth. . I ordered tire depth guage from amazon(insert in tread it shows GREEN-Yellow- RED to double check. They were correct, tires were in CAUTION area.(yellow) Visually they look excellent but not by actually CHECKING. ALL FWD owners need to check or order Amazon guage to be on top of it. Not GOOD news but the truth. Les Shwabb in Calif has EV tires rated at 80,000 miles. I will check into these and see if they back that stat. It will probaly require frequent rotations, but that is ok. Hard to beleive 5300 miles and dealer says front tires close to replacemt???????

Evolve+ Dunlop GrandTrek PT21 , 41psi on door Nissan Dealer says stick to this. He said botton line FWD really pulls on tires heavily. This is a serious COST issue I am depending on longtime friends to give your thought and get tires checked even if different brands. So please HANK, EarlyEVadopter,Atreis,PNWariya,Stercus,Tonejr83 , bufkey please run with this since you are loyal to site? Another issue is if I replace front tires I should replace rear so they match (Safety Factor) also for future tire rotations. I know not many people might have these miles but buy a tire depth guage because this is looking like a serious issue!! Also Please Fly your flag this weekend for our Veterans and if you do give city and state. I would check the tire brand and see what manufacture warranty is, if available. At that mileage range you shouldn’t have degraded tires.
EVs are tough on tires due to weight and torque, and especially if you like to floor it. Still, I'm surprised you/re at 5/32 at 5300 miles. Did you ask the dealership about the tire warranty? You can also check with the tire manufacturer. That kind of tread wear seems excessive, so maybe warrantable. Even driving like a bat out of hell you should get to at least one rotation before the tread gets that worn.

Thank you for posting this important point about tire safety. I get so caught up in high tech things going on with the Ariya, I forget about the simple things! I will get one of those green/yellow/red gauges for sure. Sometimes people can use a coin to estimate the remaining tread depth, but I'd rather get a nice little gauge. The Ariya warranty info booklet (thinner booklet included with owner manual stuff) has a section about Goodyear/Dunlop tire limited warranty -- I haven't read it completely and not sure if it covers what you are facing, but it has some phone numbers and web sites for Goodyear/Dunlop. The owner's manual on page 8-28 says that the original tires have "built in" tread wear indicators, and that when they become visible it is time to replace the tires. The same page also has a warning about just replacing 2 of the 4 original tires, and to place new tires on the rear. Hmmm...

Yes we will proudly fly the flag this Memorial Day here in Beaverton, Oregon!

Thanks for posting this. I have the same tires and just checked feeling with my fingers - The front tires definitely have less treads than the rear though I've driven less than 4k miles. Because of free EVGO charging, I've been driving mostly in Sport mode & e-Step and care less about efficiency, but now will be more conservative until the next 7.5k miles service to have a rotation - At this rate, these tires can only last ~15k miles and need frequent rotation.

Thankyou for flying FLAG, I have looked online sound like dealer shifts to Dunlop?? I am thinking lose, lose situation. I am getting mine rotated so maybe with rear tires on front I can get another 8000 miles. (plus rotation fee) I still totally love my Ariya but with 5300 miles some issues you never hear on NEWS 1) if you are a commuter and rely on EVGO charging stations many are frequently down, (my area 4 pumps down 1 week so far)also if commuter can you spare 1 hr a day sitting to charge? 2)Tire cost replacement more frequent??, 3) Plug in at EVGO sometimes get locked ? 4) If car loses power hard to put in nuetral unless familar with manual, 5) With power cord getting locked my wife will only drive if fully charged ( not comfortable will not use EVGO station, 6) AGE 66 this is my first car ever where I have 6 sticky notes in glove box if needed?, 7)Now that my 12volt battery died and I got towed to Nissan they just recharged and said good to go, if I was out of town would have got it towed, car rental, hotel? and this with only 5300 miles? 8) Bottom line I would still BUY again just so much info: Nissan does not put out after waiting 14 months. This tire thing just pisses me off...9) USA Infrastructure does not support EV yet, I am going to Yosemite in Aug they have 6 pumps with that crowd wait in line???? No take my Tacoma and relax!

With a EV you definately need a depth tire guage from Amazon it shows Green-Yellow (caution) Red , I use on 3 cars and 2 Harleys you can not do a visual or penny test. It is a $6 investment. With a EV you need this. Also all 4 tires need to match for rotation so our original 4 tires are out the window ,Thanks Nissan

Check actual depth now,if you wait until 7500 service it will be to late, rotate now so back on front will get you maybe another 6000 miles

Will call dealer to check if my first CareFree+ service can be done earlier.

Just go to any tire tire store it will be free tire depth check (2 minutes)
Tire rack shows the tires for the car. This is the 19 inch OEM, though there are Michelin non OEM, which might be what I consider later.

These tires are special EV noise reduction tires, so any replacements should have the same features or likely expect more noise without it.

Just to follow up on Tire Rack. There aren’t a lot of reviews for this tire, but the ones included aren’t good. Poor wear is noted as a particular issue.
I’m on Bridgestone Alenza’s which is one of the OEM tyres in the UK. I posted my experience in the tyre pressures thread, but you may find this useful here.

I’m at 12,000 miles having ran the tyres at 38PSI. Current tread depth is 6mm rear, 5mm front. Certainly appears to have a longer lifespan than the Dunlops.

Tire UPDATE. Just payed Les Schwab Tire Store (Calif) $27 to put front bad tires on back. Hopefully I can get at least another 7000 on these. Then I will replace all $ tires at 12,000. The dealer had OPEN RANGE HTS tires for the Ariya $305 per tire plus installation. These are 80,000 mile WARRANTY. Dealer said if they dont last long they will Pro-Rate miles and deduct for replacement. This is starting to look like my new plan. They also said make sure to rotate every 5000 miles after purchase for warranty..I looked up Dunlop tires can not find ANY site that shows mileage estimate, but did find MANY bad reviews.

I'm glad there is a good (and safe) path forward with this issue. Bad reviews don't inspire confidence, so now is the time to think about and plan on which kind of tire to get later on!
So my E4ORCE should wear out tires more evenly front to back. Hahaha

UPDATE TIRE INFO: 5/27/23. I just talked to my NISSAN dealer about Warranty on Dunlop tires. Their expert will call me on Tues with answer. I also went to Big-O Tires(Calif) because they sell Dunlop. They said I would have to file claim with Dunlop, they said Tire Dealers use to cover warranty but they never got paid for 10 months. So they quit on tires not purchase from them.So my question I have to think about is even if Nissan says they will replace do I really want to put another set that will also get only 5-7000 miles. I put front tires on back for now, I am starting to think just bite the bullet and buy 4 quality tires in approx: 4-5 months. 2 dealers told me get high mile warranty on next set and they will Pro Rate if any wear issues. Will keep updated...

Yes that way you can replace all 4 at the same time with 8000 miles on them🤩😛. It will actually be interesting on AWD tires keep us updated at 5000 miles.
