Resetting the EV system

1058 Views 18 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  PNWariya
Currently sat with a broken ariya and an estimated 4 hour wait for rescue. So any of you know how to reboot the EV system??

I was reversing and then just selected forward gear and I just got the warning sign ‘EV system malfunction EV system off’ and I can’t select a gear or go anywhere!

everythi g else is working in the car perfectly. Have locked car and walked away for 10 mins but that hasn’t done anything (that was a dealer suggestion).

many ideas Welcome as I suspect you folks may be quicker than the breakdown service who I know will just turn up and stick me on the low loader 🤦🏻‍♂️😂😂

Just following up on this post as now been rescued by the RAC. There are a couple of things worth mentioning for reference for others:

1. the engineer suspected that I’ve put the car in reverse and then selected drive whilst the car was still rolling. This apparently causes the system to shut down and happens on a lot ofEV’s including Nissan, BMW and Teslas.

2. all he did was disconnect the 12v battery in the boot. Wait for the hybrid system to drain - by watching for the rear boot (trunk) light to go off. Waited 5 mins. Reconnected thebattery and that was it. All fixed.

3.It’s a new and technical car so doesn’t come with a toolkit. I’ll now be carrying a spanner in the future just in case it happens again.

Thank you for your post. I'm so glad that it was seemingly a simple fix!

And did that work for you. I had this same issue last week and it need to go to the dealer. But if this fix works that would be good t know.
I was going to suggest disconnecting the battery, though the service person would know the details better about how long to wait. Guess we should consider having the tools available for the battery and the charge port lock release.

What kind of tool do you need for the charge port lock release?

I haven't tried using it yet. Though some have said it could be reached by hand, it seems a small long "wood" stick or maybe long thin box end wrench. Just my guess.

All we did was disconnect the 12V battery in the rear trunk. We didn't touch the charge port release. Literally he just took a small wrench to the black battery connector, disconnected it and then we waited a couple of minutes until the trunk light went out which was the indication the 12v system was off.

So what I'm going to keep in the trunk is just an adjustable spanner.

I genuinely thought I'd need towing to the dealer which would have been a pain as it's a holiday weekend in the UK so the service department is closed for 3 days!

Have been driving around fine all afternoon so seems to have done the trick. At least it's one thing to try as a quick solution if you get stuck. After waiting 2.5 hours for him to arrive and then have it as a 5 min fix - all because of no wrench :).

The engineer is incompetent and feeding you BS. Never heard of this issue with any BMW (iX nor i4) nor Teslas and I follow the forums and all FB groups. I owned an i4 for 7 months and Teslas for about 1.5 year and half.

Rear motor failures were the most common issue I've heard of.

This is the type of post I love to read.

You raised an issue you had with your Ariya. You then followed up with a solution for us to learn. Bravo! Glad everything worked out.

I will link this thread over on the Tips and Tricks thread in case someone comes across the same issue.

Just a great post, this is the type of information I read this forum for. The last piece of valuable info I read here was to use the fob to lock and unlock the car five times to eject a stuck charger plug. That saved me lots of time. This could do the same one day
After you reconnected the 12V battery, did the car still remember your settings (like memory seat position, address book, etc..)?
I am glad to hear the issue is resolved, getting stuck in an EV is no fun.

Someone asked about the charge port lock release, not sure if it was related to this incident or not.

A few weeks ago we were charging at an EVGo station, the station went into a fault mode about 1 minute after it started, but the connection was still connected and the charge port was locked.
We just wanted to put the charging connector back and go to another station, but we could not disengage the connector.

I called up EVGo support (phone number on the station) and received a person answering the phone (quite surprise it was so fast, it was 10 pm at night) She found the station, and looked up some sort of information on the Ariya.
She then asked us to use the remote and unlock the car 10 times (basically push the unlock button on the remote 10+ times)

I was a bit puzzled by this, but went ahead and did that.. and the connector unlocked.. I am actually not sure if it was the 10 pushes or something else at work there, but it did unlock the charge port, and we were able to take out the connector.

Yes, others have reported that three or five of the lock/unlock cycles also works. It is kind of puzzling!

Just happened to me. Need help on finding the 12v battery. How do I get to it?

In US cars it would be in the main engine compartment, where we are used to seeing car batteries. When the hood is open, kind of on the left side according to manual diagrams. Cars with right hand drive have a 12v located in the rear cargo area.

Well damn. I took that trunk apart and didn't see nothing, I know why now lol.

Anyways the tow guy came and by time he showed up (6 hours later) my car was working again so didn't need a tow. Hopefully it stays that way.
Our Ariya has just done the same. No drive and a message saying electric system malfunction along with headlight system malfunction and brake system warning light on. This message I saw after I held key next to start button. Even the app on phone wouldn't work properly?? Our RAC man arrived and asked about the proble. And the car behaved impeccably. Felt a right idiot. He blamed having both sets of keys in car at the same time!!
Friend of ours took their car back to Nissan after similar issue and had computer error log wiped. Now OK!.

That's interesting about both keys in the car at the same time, but I have doubts that was the root cause of the issue. I drove with both keys in the car for an extended period and no issues (yet! 😆). Glad it's working okay now!
