So, I just got my wife an Ariya Premiere in Copper

The story of my getting the Ariya is probably more interesting to me than to you, so you don't have to read this if you don't want to...

So, in 2018 my wife Vicky got a Nissan Rogue Sport. We are in our 60’s so we’ve had a fair number of cars, and she said the Rogue was her favorite car she ever had. (She didn’t put enough miles on it to start having CVT problems, LOL.) A year or two ago, we started seeing promotional materials for the then upcoming Ariya. Vicky said she had some interest in maybe getting one someday. But I’m lucky in the fact that Vicky is NOT the spendy type, I am. She is conservative. She said she had some interest, but, at the same time, no real rush as it would likely not be financially wise to trade in the Rogue for an Ariya right when they come out. But Nissan started taking reservations for $500 which was refundable. I told Vicky that we might as well put down a reservation and if we decide against it, no big deal. Wouldn’t hurt anything.

Note that at the time we put down the reservation, I was driving a Ford Edge ST as my main vehicle. I have a Mazda Speed 6 as a part-time fun car. Vicky doesn’t drive a stick, so she never drives the Speed. But she might occasionally use the Ford like if her Rogue was having maintenance or something. So, fast forward to about 6 months ago, and Vicky totaled her Rogue Sport. We weren’t going to wait for the Ariya. We would need to get another car then. Vicky said that she doesn’t drive as much as me, she will take the Edge and I got a Dodge Charger. (Again, I’m lucky, she let me have the new car.) She knows I put sound systems in my vehicle and knows I spend a few bucks, but doesn’t know the entire damage, LOL. The upshot is, my Edge was fairly highly customized. It had one-of-a-kind black and red custom leather and a $10,000+ sound system.

Now Vicky can’t tell the difference between a $10,000 sound system and an AM radio. So, she doesn’t care about the sound system in the Ford. But it has been the car we usually take when we go somewhere together. So, fine, I enjoy the system in the Ford when we are together. And I put an even better system in the Charger. ($13,000) But now that we just bought one new car, we figured that when the Ariya arrives, we will almost certainly not get it. But I never did withdraw my reservation.

So, I got a call from the dealer last week, saying that the Ariya had arrived. Me and Vicky told each other that no, we aren’t getting it. But we can go to the dealer and at least have a look at it and tell them we are going to withdraw our reservation. We get to the dealer, and we start talking to the salesman and tell him that we are just going to have a quick look, but we aren’t going to take it. I see the salesman that sold me the Ford Edge, and he’s now the sales manager at the Nissan dealer! Now I tell the sales manager (my former Ford salesman) the same thing, we just bought a Charger, and we won’t be getting the Ariya. At this point the sales manager basically takes over being the salesman and the guy who was supposed to be the salesman just is standing around. The manager of course suggested we trade in the Edge and get the Ariya. But I said that I know the car is worth more to me that it is to him, so, that just isn’t going to work.

Vicky has said a few times said that the Edge isn’t her favorite, she preferred the Rogue. But she said the Edge was “good enough” and didn’t need to change. The sales manager of course told her that he is sure she would prefer the Ariya to the Edge, and he is certain he could work the numbers on the trade in to be acceptable to me. I said I doubted it, but, okay, go ahead and run the numbers.

While the other guy was getting together some of the details, the sales manager starts to give me some of the usual stories salesman say. Its 2/28, last day of the month, it’s a short month, they haven’t met their monthly quotas and he’ll make an offer today that he won’t make tomorrow. Now, I’ve heard these kinds of stories before and I’m starting to tell him thanks for his time but I think I will just have to decline and get going. He won’t let me go and says at least look at the numbers.

I wait for the numbers and the offer he gives me for the trade-in is $25k. I said I’m sure that is a fair value but the car is worth more to me, than it is to him so I will just have to decline. And he says, “come on, at least give me a number. You want $27k? $30k? Give me a number.” I said $35k, AND I would need to keep the car for a few days to remove the stereo equipment. And he said done. I haven’t even looked at Blue Book, but I actually think that is a pretty good amount. There is some body damage. Nothing serious, but 3 of 4 corners have dings that are moderately noticeable. So I think that I probably could not get $35k for it if I sold it myself. Even if it is a relatively special one-of-a-kind vehicle. So he said “done” to the $35k and we drove home in an Ariya! I actually still have possession of Edge for the moment, it is at the stereo shop getting returned to stock (partially anyway.) The next owner will still get a pretty high end sound system even if I take the best stuff out.

If anyone wants a used Ford Edge with a one-of-a-kind interior and medium high sound system, I can tell you what dealer (in Houston) to go to.

And yes, the Vicky does like the Ariya better than the Ford.

The sales guy really wanted to add another sale that month. Good story.
Congratulations, and welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you got a decent deal, although you never know... Check what they list the Edge for. I traded my Pilot in for what I thought was a decent trade-in value for a high mileage, 8 year old car, and they sold it for at least 5K over what I traded it for. I gather they don't make much on the reservationist Ariya so good on them I suppose.

Amazing story! I’m confident your wife loves the Ariya more than anything you have owned. It seems like the Airya is made for women (too plush).

$35K for an Edge with an original trade in offer of $25K? Buy 2 Ariyas! Lol

I really enjoyed your post, and hurray for Vicky! What a great deal on the trade, too!

Thank you. Who's your salesman? I was in contact with Jerry O. They had some dealer add-on on the trim I inquired, so asked for a drive-out quote. He didn't give one. I figure I could come to check it out when have time again.

Your wife will be very safe in an Ariya.

As I walked out the flooring store this afternoon, look what I saw!

let it be known that the Ariya is bigger than the Rogue, and slightly larger than the Model Y.

I tried selling my 2020 Camry Hybrid to my Nissan Dealer. We came up with a price everyone was happy with, and signed all the paperwork to transfer the Camry. Then, they told me they will take my car, but mail the check in 5-7 business days. I said "what"???!!, and responded..."hey, I'll take the Ariya home, and will mail you a check in 5-7 days. Is that Ok?". Obviously, they looked confused. So, I drove my Camry 2 blocks away to Carmax and walk out of there 2 hours later with a check in my hand..

Hope you received a better offer from Carmax? Nissan dealership certainly MISSED a great trade in car that they could have easily made $3-5K profit…
