Undecided on FWD Ariya or AWD ioniq 5

Has anyone seen a ranking like edmunds that includes an Ariya or is it too new? My wife and I are undecided on an ariya and ioniq 5. Our main concern is build quality and reliability . Even though the ariya is new we hope that nissan brought their knowledge from the leaf forward we have a 2013 and are very happy with it but ioniq has been around a bit. Any help on where to look to research much appreciated. Cheers

From Edmunds. (I have not seen this video)

I recently drove both an AWD Ioniq 5 and an Ariya on the same day, the Ariya felt more refined to me. Maybe picky, but didn’t like the whine when decelerating or the sound of the turn signals in the Ioniq 5.

One thing I wish the ariya had that kia/hyundai have are the blind spot camera when turning.

I had not test driven the Ioniq5, nor was I interested in buying the MY. Those two vehicles are crossovers and sit really low to the ground.

I like my Ariya for many reasons which I already explained in my other posts.

The Ariya has the shape of a true SUV and sits high above the ground compared to other EVs in its class. The Ariya is very functional SUV. It may not be zippy and fast like MY performance or Ioniq 5 but it serves it's purpose as a utility vehicle.

If performance is a must, then step up to the Platinum AWD trim. Nissan has you covered

I have both an Ioniq5 SEL AWD and Aria Evolve+. Here are few thoughts specifically for these two trims.
  • Both are great cars
  • Ioniq 5drives more like a car and Aria drives like a high SUV
  • Aria is marginally better put together with more expensive feel to the outer body and hood design etc.
    • Ioniq5 rear hatch has a known rattling issue but easily fixable
  • Aria is marginally quieter than Ioniq 5, especially when in regen mode as you can hear the whine in ioniq5
  • Ioniq5 displays are significantly better than Aria
  • Ioniq5 software is well ahead of Aria
  • Ioniq5 V2L (Vehicle to load) is a great feature that Aris doesn't support
    • Think you can power the gas heater and refrigerators at the house when there is power outage
    • Set up a camp with cook top and lights and fan to boot
  • Ioniq5 is just a better thought out EV car
    • The charge trunk is powered and auto closes if you start driving; Aria is manual
    • Suspension in Ioniq5 is significantly better than Aria
      • Corners better and absorbs road imperfections better
    • Ioniq5 responds better almost like a sports car compared to Aria which feels more lumbering
    • The driver seat in ioniq5 reclines almost into a flat bed so one can take a nap at the charging stations
    • Ioniq 5 has charge indicators both at the back and the front so you can see charge status coming and going and also the charge bars
      • Aria only has one the dashboard and no bar to indicate level of charge
    • The regen modes in ioniq5 are way more customizable than Aria with a dedicated steering wheel controls
    • Ioniq5 has custom adjustable tail gate lift height and auto detects key and opens
    • Ioniq5 wireless charger is more robust than Aria which is very finicky and also you can't adjust position as hand rest is right on top of it. To adjust or remove the phone, one has to manually lift hand rest. Bad design in Aria.
    • Many other such small items but they add up
  • Aria speaker system is better than ioniq5
  • Aria has a cool feature of power open glove box
  • Aria has sunroof and HUD at this price level where as Ioniq5 only has them at limited level
  • Ioniq5 SEL AWD is readily available and costs similar to Aria Evolve+ FWD
  • Aria has rear wiper (common complaint among ioniq 5 owners), but I don't miss it
  • Aria supports wireless carplay and Ioniq5 doesn't (big factor for UX convenience)
  • Ioniq5 is a classic design (award winning) and a knock out if one likes it vs. Aria which is more conventional but pretty
  • Ioniq 5 has Highway Drive Assist 2 with lane switch capability where as Aria doesn't at this trim range
  • Charging
    • This is probably the biggest as Ioniq5 can charge easily 150-200KW speed where as Aria taps out at 50% speed of that
      • It starts to matter once you own the EV cars for a long period of time
    • Ioniq5 displays charge speed in the car, Aria doesn't
      • Very important as you want to know if charge speed has fallen that you want to get out and leave.
I can keep going. But at the same price level, I will any day pick ioniq 5 if it was my one EV.
If price difference is more than $3k as in Aria is cheaper for your buying than Ioniq 5, maybe will lean Aria.
If one needs two EVs like we do, we love the combination of owning both state of the art cars from respective companies.

Ioniq5 is arguably the best EV out there and Aria is arguably among the top 5.

Hope this helps.

I totally agree with you as it is a very helpful feature and would like to see it as standard equipment. AKA no curb rash!
Ioniq5 has custom adjustable tail gate lift height
wait, you can't preset the height of the ariya's lift gate? that would've been a big issue with my garage.

This instruction shows how to set it.

Today, I took my Ariya to Tustin Nissan to get my Ariya washed. From there, I walked to Costco and there was Hyundai dealership at the corner with Ioniq 5 SEL trims. After peaking inside the window, no thank you! The Ariya looks so much better and sits taller.

I agree with you. I didn't want to talk bad about it here but I never liked the look of it. Looks like a updated vw bug. But looks are subjective so it's not my place to tell someone else what they should like.

But are the washes at Tustin free?

No curb rash? If you are referring to parallel parking, you can turn on the right side camera to see the curb as you park….
OP:

Had my wife been accepting of the color choices (I kid you not), and the ride height I would have owned an Ioniq 5 last year. It's won a number of shoot-outs and is well regarded as a top 2 EV. Since I could not buy the IQ 5 I continued to wait for the Ariya and a chance to finally drive one. After that I went a different direction. For me, and perhaps not others, second row viability was important to me. Just too many compromises there, and in my negative perception of the ride (you may notice a post I've added to this forum to help others with ride concerns).

Now if your mission doesn't demand good second row room, then great, one problem solved. The Ariya did strike me as attractive and well done inside. More "conventional" in appearance to the IQ5, if that matters. And it could be could be worse, you could be looking at the ID4 which I refused to even drive it's second row and storage story was so bad.

As to FWD vs AWD, I can tell you the engage with small batttery was unacceptable to me, while the Evolve + power was acceptable. It's also FWD, so you don't need AWD if you expect snow'ice handling to be a requirement as you would the IQ5. Obviosly AWD ups the power to pretty much match the Tesla.

If you stay in the Ariya I would encourage you to wait until the ride story is better understood. There is just too much diversity of ride report, and at the moment it's not well understood. Failing that drive the exact car you propose to buy and ensure it makes you happy.

Finally, no tax credit, second row and ride issues. Are you "must buy now?" If not the forthcoming Blazer might be interesting. The Lyriq has been very well received, and it will be interesting to see how the treasure phases in the battery requirements. I'm expecting slowly, and that could bode well for the Blazer. Heck, I might even now somebody with a blazer reservation....

Yes, the wash was free for me because I had the wheels installed yesterday. They were going to wash my car but I was in a hurry to go home to let my dog out to do his thing. Instead, I had it done today with Jonathan’s approval.

FYI, free charging at their dealership.

Guess who I saw at Tustin Nissan? @bufkey! I was surprised! He bought the Ocean Blue with light gray interior! He went straight to the tint shop afterwards.

Thanks very much for your detailed reply. The points you bring up are just the things we were seeing. BTW here in Canada the ariya doesn't have a wiper on the back ray stupid, and if you buy the engage its almost 10k cheaper then the awd ionic if you can find an ionic at all as there are thousands of Canucks waiting for them. I realize the cost comparison isn't fare but fwd will work where we leave in winter but rwd won't so have to go with awd in the Ioniq5 cheers

Nice summary. Reviewers in the UK are ahead of the US in terms of the number of reviews. You might want to consider these as well. On the fence as well between Ariya and ID4. Nice to have first world problems. https://www.thecarexpert.co.uk/Nissans-ariya-2022/

I recommend comparing:
1. Brand history
2. Access to a dealer with good ratings
3. Road clearance - this was HUGE for us living in the mountainous area of Asheville, NC
4. Test drive experience
5. Value

Our Evolve+ has won all these categories when compared to any brand.

I have both Ioniq5 RWD and Ariya Premiere (FWD). Both are great cars, however if I had to choose between the two, I would choose Ariya over Ioniq5.

I love Ariya for build quality, ride comfort, sound dampening, SUV like seating and Propilot 2.0.

On the other hand, my wife likes to drive Ioniq5 for a non-SUV feel and one pedal driving. She does not like the e-step system in Ariya.
