Why I’m not buying a Y

Here is another reason why I’m happy to be waiting for my platinum plus E force.
Yesterday, my girlfriend left work a little early because she wasn’t feeling well. She got into her why and realize that it just started a software firmware update, and she was unable to drive her car no idea how long the firmware update would take. She finally figured out. It was going to be a three hour process. She had to take a Lyft home 60 miles and this morning I had to drive her back to work to pick up her car. It was a three hour firmware update. Thank you Elon.
So happy to be waiting for my E4orce.

Have her check the owner’s manual to have future updates scheduled during the middle of the night when the car is unlikely to be used. Any car with over the air updates should have this option to schedule.🙂

I'm surprised it started the update without her knowledge since I thought all updates require the OK to proceed, either from the touchscreen or the app. You should also get an estimate for how long it will take.

Also, there's always a slight chance a software update will cause some other serious issue, especially if you're on the advanced releases so best practice to update from home.
Also, 3 hours seems awfully long for an update. Tesla will tell you if there's an update to download (which could take hours over LTE) - the car can still be driven while it downloads in the background. After the update is downloaded I've only seen estimates of about an hour to install.
So what happens is it prompts you if you want to upgrade or delay till "Later". Apparently she picked "later", didn't schedule it, and got burnt. Poor planning silly reason, but there ARE reasons to buy other things. Here are some things the Ariya does better than a "Y":

  • They are about 2" wider. Miuch easier for 3 across child seats.
  • They have bloind spot detection on the mirror where they belong.
  • They have a display, with speedometter, in the "correct" placement for wasy line of sight viewing.
  • They aren't quite so exposed to curb rash.

The Ariya's binnacle and HUD... huge improvement over having glance over at the screen. Each car has strengths and weaknesses.

Tesla used to let you take a car out overnight (at least for the S) so you could really get a feel for it all by yourself. I wish you could do that before a purchase, not just a test drive. A full day or more alone with the car would let you make an informed decision on what's important to you.
Biggest knock against the Ariya is the pricing for the upper trims and lack of rebates? Discussed in other threads……
I can confirm to running over a curb. My Ariya took it like a champ and did not get any scratch, it was just all wheel. Wheel was not more or less damaged, nothing to worry about.

edit: I am an idiot, I thought I read running over a curb and not curb rash. Been a long day for me haha

Higher ground clearance helped in this case.

i bet your GF will want to trade in her MY once she sits inside your Plat E4orce. Show her the panoramic moonroof with the sliding sunshade cover. It will be an easy sell along with the Napa leather seats.

If I’m lucky, I’ll get to test drive one tomorrow evening. Zoom Zoom!

I don't even think the MY does updates over LTE; it requires wifi. On wifi, my last 2 updates took 25 minutes, and I am the one that initiates the installation via the app. It never installs on its own. Seems like user error.

An OTA/firmware update happened on my 23 Jeep Grand Cherokee after washing it at a self hands-free stall. Told me I should not drive... I said f**k it and drove it to an empty parking spot. Update took 10mins. Super annoying.

It's not just Teslas... many carmakers are forcing updates at the worst times.

I allowed one update over LTE by mistake. It took about twice as long vs Wi-Fi but it did download and install.

As the owner of a M3 and Evolve+, I would agree on all your points. We test drive a Y after the price dropped. We notice the width of the seats were indentical to the 3. We were looking for a bigger cabin. I was confused at first when I saw the triangle but not love not having to look down when changing lanes. Head up display is so so nice. Having got use to all the screen as I got my car on 4/1. Was thinking of buying rim protectors as my M3 rims are getting more rash with time.

Consider applying a coat of ceramic wax to your new Ariya. I bought the Turtle Wax brand from Oreillys for $25. It comes with a $5 mail in rebate.

Yup. Ariya Platinum+ is a great all-around EV with a high price tag and so-so suspension. Now that the Genesis GV60 has a lease $7500 incentive... I'd pick that because you can get a fully-loaded Advance for $52.5K.

I will not buy another Model Y (owned three of them lol) until Tesla re-adds USS and adds a 360 camera or blind spot monitors and rear cross traffic alerts. The low price is nice but I want my safety features.

Thanks for the tip! The car does comes with a clearcoat (My Tesla M3 does not). I remember my first car I would use turtle wax that was in a green round tin. Back then the can costs $5. LOL. My kids are tired of me saying 'it use to cost...'

regarding the lease...I looked at the lease options for the Ariya and all of them states you can't buy the car at the end of the lease. May be the same with the Genesis. Also the fine print stated a $4500 incentive plus others makes up the $7500. I wasn't interested so didn't ask for the details but it sound like you get a partial incentive.

Wow, you've gone through three Ys. Agree that Tesla needs more safety features at the higher models.

I would be worried if I bought the GV60 due to potential poor resale value. GV60 sales have plunged is what I heard. GV60 is such a niche EV that it would be difficult to sell when that time comes. If you lease it, that’s fine. I would not buy one myself. GV60 was at the very top of my list back in Nov 2021. Until I toured the LA Auto Show in Nov ‘21, I fell in love with the Ariya. With 12 years of EV electrification, it was a no brainer decision.

Recently, my ex gf dated a Hyundai corporate attorney. She told me Hyundai will be issuing him a GV60 as a corporate vehicle. This was back in Dec 2022. He wasn’t too happy to hear that she is a TSLA shareholder. While we were on the subject of EV, I told her I bought an EV in Feb 2023. She instantly thought I bought a Tesla. I told her Tesla is junk and I will never buy a minimalist vehicle with no frills other than a nice performance machine. She was anxious to hear what EV I bought. So, in Feb I drove down to San Diego and surprised her with my Nissan Ariya. She never heard of Nissan Ariya. I said, “well get in the car, and let’s go have sushi for lunch”. On our drive to Del Mar, she was WOWED! All of her friends have Teslas and she definitely thought the Ariya was so much nicer vehicle. (At this point, I dont think she went inside his GV60, Suffice to say, they broke up for whatever reason).

Ariya Platinum series is not for everybody. It’s a limited edition and is not affordable by everyone. No need to knock on the high price. Not everyone can afford a Mercedes AMG either. It’s a status thing for this who want the best of everything. Quite frankly, I don’t think the Platinum E4orce is expensive at all.

As of today, I still think the MY is still way overpriced for what you get (IPad on wheels).

Yeah that's a lot of Tesla's... usually that means a super fan. :)

Or quality problems, too. heh.
